3S is a simplification of 5S, which you can read more about here.
How and why did 3S come about?
The primary reason for 3S is that some organizations have decided 5S is too complicated. This follows a “less is more” philosophy, and it works.
In 2 Second Lean, Akers explains that he first experienced 3S from HOKS–a Japanese company. The company was at rock-bottom and struggling financially. The leadership wanted to become lean but felt overwhelmed by the complexity of all five S’s in 5S. So they decided to do just three: sweep, sort, and standardize.
