Most 5S instruction includes a step-by-step approach for implementing 5S.
It sounds nice, but in a lot of situations it is garbage!
That’s because it is impossible to “get it right” the first time. If you try that approach you’ll waste hours and hours thinking and planning 5S vs. learning by doing.
Each frontline leader at your organization (e.g. a team leader or engaged team member) must think with their hands and embrace the concept of “three steps forward, two steps back” when it comes to making progress.
And even if you do take a project-approach to implementing 5S, you will some day have to abandon that way of thinking and accept the truth that you will never finish.
So just get started! Practice makes perfect!
